ACLU urges Falls Natatorium to allow gay couples, domestic partners to get family rate
The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio sent a letter Friday urging Cuyahoga Falls officials to expand the types of families who may receive discounted passes at the city’s natatorium. The policy has been in the news because two Akron men who were legally married in Washington, D.C., in October tried to convert their individual memberships at the center into a family membership.Natatorium employees denied their request, saying only married couples recognized by Ohio qualify as a family.Falls City Council is asking its law director to give an opinion on the matter.“In today’s world, communities need to welcome families of all shapes and sizes,” ACLU Ohio Director Christine Link said. “We hope Cuyahoga Falls will listen to the feedback they have received and create a fair, inclusive policy that is welcoming of all residents.”Falls officials said they aren’t even sure they’re allowed to give a discount to gay couples because Ohio banned gay marriage. However, other area city-owned fitness centers, as well as all area YMCAs, have reported they do allow gay couples and heterosexual domestic partners to get family discounts. In its letter, the ACLU added that the Natatorium’s policy could affect a whole spectrum of families, including households in which a parent dies; grandparents or siblings who are raising a family member’s children; foster parents; and same-sex couples.“Cuyahoga Falls should be a welcoming place for all Ohio residents,” Link said.
